Top events and days out in February

National Storytelling Week with CADW, 27 Jan – 3 February

Discover some of Wales’s oral traditions as part of National Storytelling Week at 15 CADW sites across Wales. Wales is renowned worldwide for its literature and poetry, and you will be able to experience the best of Welsh tale spinning at these events held in conjunction with National Storytelling Week. Join a storyteller at one of CADW’s sites across the country to celebrate Wales’s oral heritage.

WRU Rugby U20 Games, 1 February

As Wales gets in the mood for a bit of 6 Nations rugby how about going along to one of the under 20s matches in Colwyn Bay.  Wales v Ireland U20s kicks off a series of games held at Eirias Stadium. Or why not visit the Millennium Stadium and catch the 2013 RBS 6 Nations Wales v Ireland match on 2 February.

The Faulty Towers Dining Experience, 1 – 13 February

Ever watched Basil Fawlty drive himself into a spinning rage and wondered whether you would have been able to keep a straight face if you were one of the unwitting guests? Though only totalling 12 episodes Fawlty Towers is responsible for some of the funniest comedy moments ever broadcast, and now you can have the chance to experience this for yourself.

Featuring all the best gags and a 3-course meal, Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is a loosely-scripted ‘13th episode’ of the TV series. Spend two hours completely immersed in the action as Sybil, Basil and Manuel serve your meal.

Welsh Cartoons Meet the Creators & Screenings, 3 & 17 February

The National Waterfront Museum are holding a series of meet the creator/writer of some of Wales’ best known children’s cartoons, alongside a screening of the programme.  What’s more is that they are completely free.  The first in the series is Igam Ogam, the successful cave girl stop-motion series. Watch it on the big gallery screen and meet the shows creator Andrew Offiler.

Robin Lyons is one of the country’ most respected animators and is responsible for writing the world famous Superted animation series.  Meet Robin on 17 February, alongside award-winning producer Greg Boardman, the creator of Rastamouse, who will share his insights into the appeal of the laid back vibe of the reggae-lovin’ mouse.

Guinness World Records on Stage, 7 February

For the first time ever, Guinness World Records arrives on stage with its record-breaking, science mad, live show. The show explores the best, the worst, the weirdest and the most unbreakable world records ever attempted and the extraordinary talents in each and every one of us.

There will be an Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator and a team of presenters as audience members attempt genuine record attempts. So unleash your inner skills and see if you too can be a record breaker!

Newtown Fest!, 8 & 9 February

Newtown Fest! will showcase the talents of local and international musicians, painters, sculptors and other artists in a two day festival that will bring the town alive. Confirmed acts include traditional Welsh folk music acts such as

The Nuclear Weasels, Velvet Dukes, and Fight the Bear, as well as local young musicians Sarah Smith Trio, and Eddy Gartry’s Blue State UK.

Day out with Thomas, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17 February

Peep! Peep! Thomas the Tank Engine is back at Llangollen Railway Station for a Day Out With Thomas.  This fun-filled event offers children and their families the opportunity to take a ride with Thomas, meet The Fat Controller and enjoy trips on Thomas’ friends.  The event, which has been held at Llangollen Railway for many years, is an excellent day out for all Thomas fans and there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy.

Love is in the Air (Welsh Mountain Zoo), 11 – 17 February

Roses are red, violets are blue, come and fall in love with the Welsh Mountain Zoo! Love is in the air at the Welsh Mountain Zoo this half term so come along and show our animals how much you care by taking part in our Valentines activities! This week you will have the chance to take part in a love birds trail as well as making your own love bug crafts. There will also be opportunities to make some special heart shaped treats for the Macaws and Amazon Parrots and the Education Officer will be giving ‘Love your Bugs’ sessions. There will also be a chance to see our Cheeky Californian Sea Lions taking advantage of this romantic half term special as they pucker up to their Trainers and Presenters in the twice daily show

Welsh Open Snooker 2013, 11 – 17 February

The best snooker players in the world will be in Newport in February for the 2013 Welsh Open. The world-ranking tournament features big names such as John Higgins, Mark Selby, Judd Trump, and top Welsh talent Mark Williams.

Classic FM Live, 14 February

Classic FM Live returns to the Wales Millennium Centre with a mix of romantic favourites, perfect for Valentine’s Day.  Alongside a host of love-themed orchestral classics performed by the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, there will be special guests including tenor Wynne Evans and former Royal Harpist to The Prince of Wales, Claire Jones playing music from her chart-topping album The Girl with the Golden Harp. They’ll be also be joined by star young pianist HJ Lim performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2, (famously used in the film Brief Encounter).
