It’s just over a week since the celebration of Saint Dwynwen who devoted her life to the happiness of lovers and became the Welsh patron saint of love. And now love is in the air once again as Wales’s top heritage sites prepare for Valentine’s Day (14 February). But whether you’re planning a date with a difference or you’re looking for that perfect place to say “I do,” there’s romance all year round at these Cadw sites…
The first date
Plan a first date to remember and it’s not just the views that will take your breath away. Dolwyddelan Castle blends beautifully with its craggy home in the heart of Snowdonia National Park and lies in ruins atop a rocky knoll surrounded by unique and spectacular landscape. A trip to this once magnificent keep is the perfect opportunity to fall in love amid its stunning mountain ranges, green valleys, gorges and waterfalls.
Pop the question
Some of Cadw’s sites have also proved to be the perfect setting for marriage proposals. Kidwelly Castle was an idyllic backdrop for one romantic, as he got down on one knee last month to propose to his beloved while their song echoed around the castle walls. And another lucky lady from Wrexham was flying high last September. Her boyfriend called on the custodians at Caernarfon to unravel a large banner in the grounds of the castle as he asked for her hand in marriage while they flew past from nearby airfield, Dinas Dinlle.
Wedding bells
More than 75 couples said “I do” at Cadw sites during 2012 and each memorable event went down in history. From Plas Mawr, the finest Elizabethan town house in Britain to the Great Halls at Tretower Court and Castle, and enchanted Castell Coch, to Caerphilly, Wales’ largest castle, these dramatic and romantic sites provide the perfect setting for your special day.
Come rain or shine
Whether you’re planning to warm someone’s heart in winter or enjoy some summer loving, a romantic walk is sure to win them over. Visit Oxwich Castle in beautiful Gower and take full advantage of the panoramic sea views across the headland before exploring miles of coastal paths at your leisure.
