Celebrating Saturnalia in Wales

Saturnalia by Antoine-François Callet

Far be it for us to wish away the festive season but it’s worth keeping an eye on the coming decade. Llanwrtyd Wells, self-proclaimed “smallest town in Britain”, has the ideal antidote to the post-Yule slump.

Saturnalia, the Roman festival celebrating the mythical golden age of Saturn when all Men were equal, saw servants being served by their masters and a household Lord of Misrule presiding over fun and frolics of all kinds.

Llanwrtyd Wells is bringing Saturnalia back to life with a day (9th January 2010) of Roman drinks, food and fun. Clad in a toga you can sample antique delicacies such as Pernae Cocturam (honey roast ham) and Lumbuli Assi Ita Fiunt (roast lambs’ testicles). Boiled flamingo and Stuffed Dormice are currently off the menu but we’ll keep you posted.

The traditional fun continues with a beer festival and mountain bike chariot race. There are opportunities to experience the stunning Cambrian mountains with an organised ramble and a “Wobble”, that’s rambling on a bike to the uninitiated.
