Rhod Gilbert - Getting Involved

Rhod Gilbert - Getting Involved

Visit Wales Advertising Campaign

Visit Wales (formerly Wales Tourist Board) will launch their new TV advertising campaign in January 2009. The television campaign features comedian Rhod Gilbert on his quest around Wales to find out what it has to offer and shed a little light on some marketing speak, as Rhod puts it..

I have heard people talk about ’sense of place’ … I am here to find out exactly what that means….

Follow the “Holidays Unpackaged” story online

The TV ads are part of a family of of short films. Some will be aired on TV, with the story continuing online at www.unpackaged.visitwales.co.uk

The films provide a sense of what Wales has to offer as a destination…..

  • for the foodie
  • f or the outdoor and activity enthusiast
  • for those who like a greener, eco friendly holiday
  • for those who want to try something a little different

suitcaseQuick facts about the advert

The more inquisitive may want to know a little about the places and people featured in the adverts.

While the businesses featured in the ads represent great places to visit and stay on your welsh holiday, there are plenty of other great places to stay and visit in Wales on Visit Wales.

As regards the TV ad the following Q & A’s should help……..

Who is Rhod Gilbert?

Carmarthenshire born comedian Rhod Gilbert won the Perrier Newcomer award at the Edinburgh Festival in 2005, he is also the first comedian to play Taiwan !  Along with his BBC Wales Radio Show Rhod also appeared atthis years Royal Variety show.

Where is the vineyard featured in the adverts?

The Vineyard and Restaurant featured in the Visit Wales TV Ads is Llanerch Vineyard. It is one of the largest  is the largest and oldest premier vineyards in Wales.

Where is the restaurant featured in the adverts?

The restaurant in the ads was also filmed in the kitchens of Llanerch Vineyard. For those wishing to learn how to cook, lessons are available that cover the cookery basics through to masterclasses.

The film features the Harbourmaster Hotel, which part of Wales is it?

The Harbourmaster Hotel is located in Aberaeron. Aberaeron is a coastal town in Ceredigion. Maybe not as well known as other West Wales areas (some best know it as Cardiganshire) Ceredigion is just as beutiful, and ideal  for a short break walking or just relaxing.

Rhod goes to sleep in some weird dome shaped room at the end of one of the films - is that a hotel?

Tipi

The dome shaped room is actually a tent in ‘Fforest’,  a camp site in Ceredigion that takes a different approach to camping.

As we have discussed in our cool camping posts here before, there are many alternative ways to spend a night under canvas in Wales, Fforests describe their site.

Low density clusters are integrated within the landscape and the agricultural traditions of the farm, creating individual sites that will allow guests to best appreciate this outstanding natural environment. Choose from Nomad tunnel tents, Swedish Kata tipis and geodesic domes, all sited on elevated decks with communal cooking areas.

Jumping off cliffs into the sea - whats all that about?

The technical term for what Rhod was doing was coasteering. He was taken coasteering by Pembrokeshires Outdoor Adventure TYF.

  • Nice campaign - shame about the date in the headline...or does Rhod find a time machine tucked away in the Ceredigion hills?

Nice ad. It reminds me of the Isle of Man advert.
  • fiona
Yeah I thought that too, but the jump isn't half as good as on the IOM ad. this ad also reminds me of the New Zealand ads. I guess it's hard to think of original ideas for destinations.
  • Great advert! Truly embraces the spirit of what Wales has to offer and has been done in a sympathetic way, I feel! As a chef in the harbourmaster hotel, I am truly honoured to work in such a thriving business and do hope people who see the advert are inquisitive enough to come and visit us either for the day, or to spend the evening in one of our beautifully decorated rooms. Aberaeron is the perfect get-away to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

GREAT campaign. Funny bloke laid back yet interested and enthusiastic. We are making a booking at Fforest right now!
  • Katie
Brilliant advert - really makes me want to visit Wales. Need to find the perfect holiday partner.
  • Hitono
You're right Fiona & Sarah it is quite similar to the Isle of Man advert. I thought that when I saw it last night on the telly.
  • Dennis Arkwright
I agree with Sarah and Fiona above, it seems like they couldn't think of anything original for themselves and just copied the Isle of Man, who not only came out first but seem to have a far more adventurous take on jumping into the sea - coasteering!
  • Rupert
    Oh no...

This ad is the almost the same as the ad for the Isle Of man which my darling wife fell for and resulted in me spending two precious weeks being forced to ride a bike across a muddy track whilst carrying my meals and clothes for the next day. If you want to ride bikes across muddy tracks, walk through hills go the the Isle Of Man.

If you must get my wife to use sexual politics to con me out of another two weeks of paid leave then at least think up an original concept.

It gives outdoors types, the Welsh and you a bad name.
  • Rupert
I'll go no holiday with you Katie...

As long as we can stay in bed for the whole week.
  • Mary Evans
Wales is such a beautiful country and yet this made it trivial and seemed to advertise the one hotel?
    What a waste of money
