That Newport State of Mind

There is a video knocking about on You Tube at the moment that’s ‘on fire’. Its not for us to condone or condemn the skit, but you have to concede that Newport has consistently proved its down to earth credentials and its ability to poke fun at itself.

Now that the cats out of the bag about Josie D’Arby being from Newport we thought we might add a few more Newport facts (admittedly in a less entertaining fashion than mjdelaneyfilms). Here goes…

  1. Joe Strummer studied in Newport and frequented the now legendary TJ’s
  2. Johnny Morris (Animal Magic) was born in Newport
  3. Jools Holland wrote a song about an after-gig experience in Newport
  4. Kurt Cobain is said to have proposed to Courtney Love in TJ’s
  5. Goldie Lookin Chain are from Newport
  6. Christian Malcolm and Jamie Baulch (athletes) are both from the ‘Port
  7. Newport will host 2012 Olympic events in its Velodrome
  8. The 60ft Dolls, Feeder, Skindred (and lead singer Benji’s prior band Dub War) and The Darling Buds all have Newport roots
  9. Michael Sheen, the actor, was born in the city
  10. Desmond Llewelyn (Q from the Bond Movies) was born in Newport

Finally, we can also confirm the information in the You Tube video, namely that Newport is in fact twinned with Guangxi Province in China (along with Heidenheim, Kutaisi and Annapolis, MA).
