May is a great month. The weather should be warming up and we’re approaching the 2nd bank holiday of the month. Here’re some ideas of things to do in Wales across the spring bank holiday weekend.
Cosmeston Medieval Village
24 – 25 May
For a journey through history head down to Cosmeston Medieval Village this bank holiday weekend and see the ever popular Vikings, Warriors of Ancient Greece, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Queen Victoria’s Redcoats, Pirates and much more.
Guardian Hay Festival
21 – 31 May

David Simon - writer of hit TV series 'The Wire' is at Hay this year
If you enjoy reading then visit Britain’s largest literary festival. The Guardian Hay Festival set in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park will play host to comedians, writers and musicians. Packed with readings, interviews, talks and workshops it’s guaranteed to get your creative juices going.
Highlights this year include Jeremy Paxman, Jo Brand, Trudie Styler and Sting. You can be assured there’ll be plenty of lively debate at this year’s festival.

Welsh Perry and Cider Festival
23 – 24 May
The Welsh Perry and Cider Society are holding their premier event where you can sample craft perries and ciders from all its members.
The festival takes place at the award winning country pub and restaurant The Clytha Arms, set in beautiful surroundings near Abergavenny. On Sunday 24th May there will be a hog roast and live music to enjoy.
If you fancy staying over they’ll allow you to pitch a tent for free but you’ll need to book ahead and leave a deposit. You can find accommodation near Abergavenny here.![]()
Urdd Eisteddfod
24 – 30 May

Urdd Eisteddfod - Youth Festival in Cardiff Bay
The Urdd National Eisteddfod is one of Europe’s largest youth festivals and will be held in Cardiff Bay. Starting Sunday evening (24th May) Bryn Terfel will open the Eisteddfod with a spectacular concert at the Wales Millennium Centre.
The full program begins on bank holiday Monday (25th May) and Cardiff Bay will be buzzing with all kinds of family entertainment – various stalls, street theatre, exhibitions and live bands.
There’s a sports area with golf, canoeing and a climbing wall, cookery demonstrations and a funfair. And this year’s winning entries from the Craft, Design and Technology competitions will be on display in the celebrated Senedd building.
With over 100,000 visitors, 15,000 competitors, and the whole event being broadcast live on S4C and BBC Radio Cymru, it promises to be a memorable event.
Prestatyn Classic Car Show
24 – 25 May
Prestatyn’s 10th annual Classic Car Show will feature over 200 classic cars and motorcycles. On Sunday 24th see the classic cars run through the beautiful countryside of North Wales. Then on Monday see the vehicles at the static show held in the centre of Prestatyn with cars from the early 1900’s up to present day supercars.
Castell Coch
24 May 11am – 4pm

Trainee knights ?
Fancy training as a knight? Cadw’s gallant knight Sir Andrew will be holding court at Castell Coch on Sunday 24th May, head down and become one of his apprentices.
Then join the Spellbinder at Castell Coch on Monday 25th May, 11am-4pm for tales from Aesop’s Fables. With paintings of Aesop’s fables adorning the walls of the spectacular octagonal drawing room, step back in time and enjoy these enchanting tales in wonderful surroundings.

Caerphilly Castle
24 – 25 May 11am – 4pm

Caerphilly Castle Under Seige
Caerphilly castle is one of Wales’ largest castles and with spectacular turrets and moat it’s a great family day out. It’s also a great castle weddings venue. This bank holiday weekend go and witness the firing of the mighty siege engines with the Bowmen of the Rose and Company of Chivalry.
